Welcome to Week 4 of the Active Intelligence Challenge!

Complete this week’s challenge, share your output in the comments, and comment to win swag 👀

This week, we’re focusing on the contacts you already have but aren’t reaching. They opened once, maybe clicked once—and then went quiet.

Your challenge: use Active Intelligence to build a multi-step re-engagement sequence for contacts who haven’t opened an email in 90 days, and give them a reason to come back.

How to run your Week 4 task

Paste this into Active Intelligence:

Build a multi-step re-engagement sequence for contacts who haven’t opened an email in 90 days. Include timing, messaging angle for each step, and a final sunset step if they still don’t engage.

Or use this quick-start prompt:

Create a re-engagement campaign for contacts who haven’t opened an email in 90 days.

You’ll get…

  • A re-engagement sequence with timing, messaging angles for each step, and a sunset condition to help keep your list clean
  • List health insights so you can see which contacts are worth pursuing—and which ones are ready to sunset
  • An automation that runs itself, so anyone who reaches 90 days of inactivity is enrolled automatically

To get credit for completing Week 4:

Drop a comment with your Active Intelligence output in the replies below. That earns your spot on the leaderboard and enters you in this week’s prize draw.

Here’s what’s on the line:

  • 🏅 Weekly prizes (top 10 this week) get an AC-branded mug or $20 gift card!
  • 🏆 Grand prize (top 5 overall at the end of the challenge) get a tumbler, Active Intelligence crewneck, AC-branded hat, and a feature of your business in front of our 185k+ LinkedIn followers. For folks outside the U.S., the top 5 finishers get a $150 gift card (+LinkedIn feature) instead!
  • 📣 Bonus: share your results in an Instagram Story, tag @ActiveCampaign, and you could get a shoutout this week!

Let’s see your results below! Did anything surprise you?

What Was Built

Re-engagement automation for contacts who haven't opened an email in 90 days. Sends 3 expert-focused emails over 21 days with conditional branching. If a contact opens any email, they are tagged as re-engaged, their `engagement_status` is updated to `active`, and they exit the automation. If there are no opens across all 3 emails, the contact is tagged `re-engagement-failed` and `engagement_status` is set to `inactive`.

Sequence at a Glance

| Step | Timing | Angle | CTA |

| **Email 1** | Day 0 | "Are you getting the most from xxxxx?" — curiosity hook + free resource offer | Consume content / free resource |
| **Email 2** | Day 7 (no open) | "Here's what you're missing" — hidden capabilities, expert tips | Consume content |
| **Email 3** | Day 14 (no open) | Question format — "Still want to hear from us?" — honest, direct preference check | Update preferences |
| **Sunset** | Day 21 (no open) | Tag: `re-engagement-failed` · Field: `engagement_status = inactive` | Suppression / list protection |

**If opened at any step** → Tag: `re-engaged` · Field: `engagement_status = active` · Exit automation

Why This Approach Works

- **Expert tone** is used throughout (CTR lift vs. account average)
- **Free resource / consume_content CTAs** replace discount offers
- **Question format** on Email 3 taps an underused high-lift pattern
- **Sunset step** protects deliverability
- **Concise copy + limited links** align with the account's structural signals

Wow this worked amazing! It even built the email, needs tom refinements but overall looks decent.

Campaign: Dealer Re-engagement Confirmation

What’s included:

  • Headline: We’ve Missed You
  • Subheadline: Focused on staying connected and receiving relevant updates
  • Body copy: Acknowledges the gap in engagement, highlights the types of communications recipients may have missed, and reinforces the value of staying subscribed
  • CTA: Directs recipients to manage or confirm their communication preferences
  • Subject line: Uses a formal, notice-style approach
  • Preheader: Reinforces the need to confirm preferences and stay connected
  • Design: Clean, minimal layout consistent with established brand standards

Recommended next steps:

  • Segment the audience based on a defined period of email inactivity
  • Review and test the campaign, including links and preference-management functionality
  • Send or schedule based on established campaign timing and audience engagement patterns

Your re-engagement campaign is ready! 🎉

Here's what was created:

Campaign: Your Free Karma Mantra Practice From Dr. Pillai, Whenever Campaign ID: 11048

The email is built around a warm, non-judgmental reconnection with a free karma mantra audio practice as the lead offer, followed by a soft introduction to a lower-cost course — following the value-first approach that works well for re-engagement.

What's inside the campaign:

  • A welcoming opening that gently acknowledges the contact may have stepped away — no guilt, no pressure
  • A reminder of the value of Dr. Pillai's teachings (mantras, meditation, karma remedies, prosperity)
  • A free karma mantra practice offer with a clear, soft CTA
  • A gentle secondary mention of an accessible course
  • A closing soft invitation

Subject line is personalized (leads with "Your"), curiosity-based, and targets the 90–105 character sweet spot for optimal open rates on your account.

Next steps to get this live:

  1. Review the email in your campaign editor and update the free resource link and course details
  2. Build a segment of contacts who haven't opened an email in the last 90 days to use as your send list
  3. Schedule or send once the links and any course specifics are confirmed

Would you like me to help build the 90-day non-opener segment, or make any adjustments to the campaign content?

The Automation: Why This Structure Works

1. 3 Emails Before Sunset — Not Too Many, Not Too Few

The sequence uses a 3-touch approach with 7-day gaps (21 days total). This is intentional:

  • Too few touches and you give up on contacts who just needed the right message
  • Too many and you accelerate unsubscribes and damage deliverability
  • 7-day gaps give enough breathing room so it doesn't feel spammy, but keeps the sequence tight enough to stay relevant

2. Escalating Messaging Angles

Each email has a different emotional angle — by design:

  • Email 1 — Warm check-in: low pressure, opens the door
  • Email 2 — Value-forward: gives them a reason to engage (an offer, resource, or event)
  • Email 3 — Honest farewell nudge: "We see you, the door is open, but we want to respect your space"

This mirrors how a real relationship works — you wouldn't say "we're cutting you off" on the first reach-out.

Recommended Next Steps

  1. Connect the campaign to the automation — use the Step 1 email in the sequence, or send the campaign as a standalone to your 90-day inactive segment first, then enroll non-openers into the automation
  2. Build your segment — want me to create a segment of contacts who haven't opened in 90+ days to target both of these?
  3. Review & activate — both assets are ready and waiting for your final touch in the editor

I used the prompt: Build a multi-step re-engagement sequence for contacts who haven't opened an email in 90 days. Include timing, messaging angle for each step, and a final sunset step if they still don't engage.

📬 Re-Engagement Sequence Overview
Step 1: “We Miss You”

Angle: A warm, genuine check-in — no pressure, just heart. Reminds the contact that Kender is a welcoming community with a place for every level and every goal. CTA: See what’s happening at Kender

Step 2: “Here’s what you’ve been missing”

Angle: Brings the studio’s energy to life - achievements, milestones, community. CTA: Reconnect with Kender Family

Step 3: Personal Invitation

Angle: A low pressure, heartfelt invitation = we’d love to see you again with a free trial class or open house offer. CTA: Claim your spot

Step 4: Sunset Email

Angle: an honest, gentle goodbye or stay email. No guilt - acknowledge that life gets busy and thats okay. CTA: Yes, Keep me on the list.
