Dynamic linking (custom/hidden field) not working

Hey there, AC community,

would really appreciate any feedback from you, since I am having a problem with a specific form on our website.

We are experiencing an issue with our automated email newsletter where a button that references a custom field is no longer working properly. This feature was previously functioning correctly but stopped working after we updated our newsletter template design.

  • We have an automated email that sends a personalized PDF link to customers when they fill out a form (dynamic, should be updated uppon sending, depending on the url that is filled out on our website).
  • The email contains a button that should link to a PDF URL stored in our custom field (field[31] / “Povezava za prenos”)
  • When recipients click the button, they receive a “400 Bad Request” error instead of being directed to the PDF
  • The button appears to be trying to submit a form to strokasi.activehosted.com/proc.php instead of redirecting to the custom field URL

Technical Details:

  • Custom field ID: field[31]
  • Custom field name: “Povezava za prenos”
  • Current field reference in template: %H_FIELD% (we’ve also tried %FIELD31% and plenty others 😆)
  • Platform: DNN with Active Campaign integration
  • The custom field contains valid PDF URLs (e.g., https://www.stroka.si/Portals/0/Datoteke/…)

This automation was set up by an external agency and was working perfectly - customers could click the button and download their personalized PDF files.

After updating our newsletter template design to match our company branding, the button now generates form submission requests instead of direct URL redirects, resulting in 400 errors.

Our development team is not familiar with Active Campaign’s custom field referencing system, and we need this functionality restored as it’s critical for our customer onboarding process. This form works best for us, because we can use one form for all of the case studies or guides.

Now, I am not in any way an expert at writing code, so this may not be the best explanation. 😅

Would appreciate any feedback if anyone of you has set up a similar thing on your websites. Thank you in advance! 😊
