Need a Workflow idea to track referrals

I’ve been discussing some list growth ideas with a client, and one that we came up with was encouraging subscribers to refer their friends to sign up.

Nobody uses the forward to a friend form these days so we want to approach this in a way that directs the friends to a signup page, but also has attribution in a hidden field or something (so we can identify who is generating the most referrals)

Any thoughts or even additional tools that would help with this?

@stephanhov – Do you know what service you would be using to send the friends to a sign up page? Obviously if you’re not forwarding to a friend there is another plan in place. Any more information you might help me come up with ideas.

a custom link, perhaps? I asked because I don’t know how I would structure this beyond that.

@stephan, you could use UTM url which will show in your Google Analytics. But I don’t know how you can automate the UTM urls generation…if you can find a way to do that, your problem is solved.
