If user gets to last step in Automation, do they STAY there?

If a user gets to the last “node” of an Automation, do they just sort of “stay” there or do they “leave” the automation?

I.e., see this screenshot:

If a user got to the one of the (+) indicated by the Red Arrows, and I added a step a week later, would those users THEN execute that step, or would they have “left” the Automation already?

If the latter (“they have left the automation”), how can I see which ones have leaked out?

USE CASE:

I created a Course (screenshot above). and I think some folks got “ahead” of me and leaked out the spots with red arrows.

In the example provided, the automation would just end. It is effectively the same as having an “end automation” step.
