How to Automate the Renaming of Shopify Tags

Hello,
We have AC connected to our Shopify store. I have tagged each Shopify product with a custom tag, but when the customer information from a sale is imported into AC, only the “generic” Shopify tags are imported, and not the custom tags.
The reason we are using the custom tags is to streamline and simplify the messaging to our shipping team.
Example:
Shopify
Title of product: “Eighth Beef Promotion – $485.00”
Custom tag: “Eighth Beef”
AcitveCampaign
Actual imported tag of product: “Line Items Name” “New York Steak – $24.00/lb”
Desired product tag after import: “Eighth Beef”

Is there a way to:

  1. Import the custom tag assigned in Shopify – “Eighth Beef” or
  2. Automate the renaming of the tag from “New York Steak – $24.00/lb” to “Eighth Beef”
  3. Should I use a third party application, like Zapier to automate the process.

This is the first step, in a series of “customizations” we want to do.

It would be great if I can get some guidance on the best way to set up this workflow.

Thank you.

@kcc-apps Abbie from ActiveCampaign here! Sorry for missing your question. I’m glad you reached out!

How are you integrating with Shopify? I’m guessing you may be using our direct integration - if so, I think there is a work around we can build in ActiveCampaign to support your flow. I also have an alternative your team can consider to minimize the building needed to push that information into ActiveCampaign!

  • Create an automation triggered by a new purchase - the automation will use If/else steps using “contains” or “is” language to identify and correct the tags. You could use "if tag "New York Steak – $24.00/lb” to “Eighth Beef” exists, then delete that tag and add “Eighth Beef” tag. If that tag does not exist, use an if/else step to check for the next product and so on. This type of approach may require some ongoing maintenance, as you would need to ensure it’s updated as you add new products or change your tracking tags.

  • Zapier is a great option as an alternative - you can use the a trigger from Shopify like tag added or purchase made to more easily and quickly pull that data in and apply it as a new tag to your desired contact. Depending on your zap and account type, there may be a cost associated with using Zapier, so I’d recommend calculating how many ‘zaps’ or times you expect for this to trigger so you can better assess any impact. That said, I personally prefer this solution as I find it a bit simpler and I would not want to return and continue to make updates to my automation as my products and tags change in the future.

If you have any additional questions about these options and pros/cons, just let us know at help@activecampaign.com so we can help you review your use case and make sure you have the best possible build for what you need to accomplish!
