End automation upon reply - no reply tracking

My automation starts with an e-mail as soon as a contact’s status field changes.
I then create a « deal » and if the contact hasn’t replied to the first e-mail, a follow-up e-mail is sent.

What I’m trying to achieve is this:
IF a contact replies to my e-mail, the goal would be to skip the follow-up e-mail and to send the deal into the next stage, regardless of the contents of the reply.

However, this isn’t working. The goal within the automation isn’t picking up on the reply of the “personal e-mail”.

The reason why I’m using a “deal”, is to force AC to register the contact’s reply.

I don’t want to use reply tracking as all our e-mails must look like an actual e-mail, not just a non-personalised marketing e-mail.
It’s sent from the assigned Account Manager’s e-mail (used a custom field for this) and they receive the actual reply in their mailbox. I just need to make sure the follow-up e-mail isn’t being sent as this would seem odd to the contact.

Does anyone know how to work around this?
