Hi! I’m new to ActiveCampaign. I’m trying to set up Lead Scoring so that I can move contacts to MQL when they have reached a threshold. It looks like if I want to have this lead scoring run all the time, then I need to do this in Automations, not Lead Scoring. Do I have that correct? I have set up the individual Automations to create the lead score. However nothing is happening and my Contact Lead Score is not populating. What have I done wrong?
You’re correct! Continuous lead scoring needs to be done through Automations, not the standalone Lead Scoring feature.
Common issues that prevent scores from populating:
- You’ll want to ensure automations are active/published
- Verify you’re using the “Adjust Contact Score” action (not custom fields)
- Make sure contacts are actually entering the automations (check automation reports)
You can manually add a test contact to one of your scoring automations to see if the score updates. This will show if it’s a trigger issue or action setup problem.
What triggers are you using for your scoring automations?
Thanks for your help! Great to know I’m on the right track by doing it through Automations. Do the automations trigger based on past behaviour? e.g. would they calculate a score based on a past form submission, or will it only trigger for future actions?
The triggers I’m using are: submits a contact form, visits the website, opened email, clicked on link in email, downloads eBook, subscribes to newsletter.
Automations are unfortunately only forward-looking - so they only trigger on actions that happen after the automation is activated. They won’t retroactively score contacts for past behavior.
So if someone submitted a form last month and you just created the automation today, that past form submission won’t trigger the scoring. But any new form submissions will!
You can manually add or bulk import contacts into an automation, though, which could be an option if you build a segment based on if they had submitted the form in the past.
I also have a problem with lead scoring, so I’m asking you here if you know this problem. You can define that points should expire after a certain time, but they do not. See my post here: Lead Scoring – Expiration not working as expected - Ask a question - Community
Can you possibly help?
Hey Sven! I’ll jump over to that original thread and check it out!
Thanks very much for your help! My lead scoring is working now for current actions. And I’ve figured out a manual workaround for the leads that have come through in the last month. Thanks!
